This accessibility statement applies to the MAGIC map service https://magic.defra.gov.uk/
This website is managed by Natural England and hosted by Landmark Solutions. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate some of the website using speech recognition
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (using NVDA)
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- you cannot navigate the interactive map page with a keyboard
- the text will not reflow in a single column when you change the size of the browser window
- you cannot change colours, contrast levels and fonts or text size
- you cannot always tell which page element has keyboard focus some information is only available as PDF files and they may not read correctly in screen readers and other types of assistive software
- you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
- some images do not have alternative text
- the interactive map language is not specified so may not be read out with the right pronunciation
We will be working with our supplier from October 2022 on the accessibility requirements and will update the statement then to give a firm timescale of when issues will be fixed.

Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
-
Broken links
Content not within the scope of accessibility regulations
We use maps to share geographic information about the natural environment on the website. Maps are exempt from the accessibility regulations.
- It is not possible for someone using a keyboard to use the interactive map and therefore to access datasets and layers. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 Keyboard (A).
- Content does not maintain function/structure when users navigated the page using reflow options. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.10 Reflow (AA).
- It is not possible to increase the size of all text by up to 200%, so that partially sighted people can comfortably read content. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.4 Resize text (AA).
- Information, structure, and relationships conveyed through presentation were not programmatically determined or available in text ie. In PDFs. This fails WCAG success criterion 1.4.5 Images of Text (AA).
- It is not possible to change to line height, letter or word spacing for all text. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.12 Text Spacing (AA).
- Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-text Content (A).
- The language for the interactive map page is not specified because adding language will break some map functionality, so people using a screen reader may not hear the correct pronunciation. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.1.1 Language of page (A).
- It is not always possible to tell which element has keyboard focus so sighted keyboard cannot see where they are on the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.7 Focus visible (AA).
